What is an Athletic Trainer?
From on-field medical care to rehabilitation to return-to-play, athletic trainers make safe participation in sport and physical activity possible. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.
Why do I need an Athletic Trainer?
Participation in athletics and physical activity involves an inherent risk of injury. The presence of athletic
trainers reduce that risk. Here are just a few of the key functions athletic trainers perform to ensure
physical activity and sport are practiced safely:
- Develop emergency action plans
- Monitor field, environment, and weather conditions
- Coordinate injury prevention programs
- Prepare athletes for practices and games
- Communicate with physicians about injuries
- Treat and rehabilitate injured players
- Help determine return-to-play programs for injured athletes
